4 Tech Tools for Assistive Communication

Technology can be a real game-changer in the classroom, especially for students with special needs. Students with speech and language disorders usually find it challenging to communicate effectively in school. Here are four easy tech tools that can provide assistive communication:

  1. Some students may find it easier to comprehend audio instructions instead of reading text. Text 2 Speech is a free online text-to-speech converter. You can use this tool to convert text from e-books, lesson instructions, or assignments. (Did you notice that this blog post can also be listened to? Professional Learning Board strives to accommodate all learners!)
  2. GoTalkNow includes adjustable page layouts, customizable navigation, and text-to-speech capabilities.
  3. Clicker is a fun program that facilitates note taking, speech feedback and word prediction. Using Clicker can help boost speaking, listening, and reading skills.
  4. My Talk Tools Mobile helps students with communication difficulties say what they want with sequences of words, sounds and images.

Some food for thought:

  • Do you use assistive communication tech tools in the classroom? Why or why not?
