How Science of Reading Training Advances Your Career
How Science of Reading Training Advances Your Career
More than 40 states have now passed laws or policies requiring evidence-based reading instruction. For classroom teachers, that legislative shift means one thing: Science of Reading (SoR) training is no longer just professional development — it’s a career differentiator.
Teachers who complete SoR training are better positioned for roles that didn’t exist at scale a decade ago. Literacy coaches, reading specialists, and instructional coordinators are in high demand across the country. And the salary jumps are real.
What the Data Actually Shows
The Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks reading specialists under the Instructional Coordinators category. According to BLS, the median annual wage for instructional coordinators was $74,720 in May 2024 — significantly higher than the median classroom teacher salary in most states. (BLS, 2024)
The salary range is wide. Reading specialists earn between approximately $35,000 and $91,000 depending on location, experience, and education level. Literacy coaches average $75,050 annually according to Comparably, with literacy consultants reaching $85,000 to $95,000 at the 25th to 75th percentile range. (ZipRecruiter, 2025)
The jump from classroom teacher to reading specialist or literacy coach isn’t guaranteed — but SoR training is increasingly the credential that makes it possible.
Three Roles SoR Training Opens Up
Literacy Coach
Literacy coaches work with teachers rather than students. Their job is to model effective literacy instruction, observe classroom practice, provide feedback, and help colleagues implement evidence-based strategies. As a result, they serve as a bridge between research and classroom reality. Demand for literacy coaches has grown significantly as states move from passing SoR legislation to actually implementing it.
Reading Specialist
Reading specialists assess struggling readers, design intervention programs, and often lead school-wide literacy initiatives. Many states require a reading specialist endorsement or certification beyond a standard teaching license. However, SoR professional development — particularly at the graduate level — builds directly toward those requirements.
Instructional Coordinator
Instructional coordinators oversee curriculum development, evaluate instructional materials, and support teachers across a school or district. According to BLS, this role projects 2% job growth through 2034, with approximately 20,400 annual openings — most of them resulting from workers transitioning out of the role or retiring. (BLS, 2024)
Why Now Is the Right Time
Only 53% of teacher preparation programs include instruction in phonemic awareness — one of the most foundational reading skills. (Fordham Institute, 2026) That gap created the demand. Districts across the country are actively searching for teachers who already understand the research and can help implement it.
Furthermore, the teachers who pursued SoR training early are the ones now being tapped for coaching, specialist, and coordinator roles. Waiting for your district to require it means starting from the same place as everyone else.
