What Online Teaching Actually Looks Like

Fully Online
Some teachers have moved entirely out of the physical classroom. They teach live virtual classes, design asynchronous learning experiences, and support students they may never meet in person. As a result, the flexibility is real (and so is the reach).

Hybrid and Hyflex
Many teachers today have both in-person and virtual students in the same class at the same time. Hyflex learning gives students the choice of how to participate whether that’s in person, synchronously online, or asynchronously. In addition, managing both well is a skill that requires intentional planning and the right tools.

Virtual Field Trips
Students don’t need a permission slip to visit the Smithsonian, the Great Barrier Reef, or the International Space Station anymore. Virtual field trips bring the world into the classroom and give every student access to experiences that geography and budget used to limit.

Online Tutoring and Intervention
Teachers with specialized skills (reading intervention, math support, ELL instruction) are building thriving online practices outside their districts. Some work a few hours a week. Others have left the building entirely.

Multi-State Teaching
More states are participating in reciprocity agreements, making it easier for licensed teachers to teach students in multiple states without starting the licensing process from scratch. Online teaching makes geography irrelevant.
